In Honor Of Amps That Go Up To 11...
In Honor Of Amps That Go Up To 11... Suzy S. If youâre a fan of the rock mockumentary This is Spinal Tap, you know the significance of 11 â" you know, one louder than 10? Itâs a big deal, folks. So much so that fans have dubbed today, 11/11 among other things Nigel Tufnel Day in honor of that special amplifier. (Check out the iconic movie clip here.) So today, crank your volume up to 11 and check out these other LOUD things in rock roll history: Loudest Song Shorter Than Two Seconds Grindcore, a particularly grating subgenre of hardcore punk, is often characterized by loud, brief songs. You Suffer, a 1987 song from genre trailblazers Napalm Death, holds the Guinness World Record for shortest song ever recorded, at 1.316 seconds. Appropriately enough, it was chosen as the bands debut single, released as a 7 on Earache Records. Loudest Mouths In Rock Oasis bandmates Liam and Noel Gallagher have been publicly feuding since the groups first American tour in 1994 (and thats not including the bros personal squabbles before Oasis). While younger brother Liam handled vocal duties, older brother Noel wrote the bands music and generally controlled their creative direction. But egos and grudges got in the way quickly, leading to public fights (including a recorded argument on a 1995 bootleg single and Liams last minute withdrawal from Oasis 1996 MTV Unplugged performance), personal ridicule, and constant conflict thats never let up since the bands start. Even after Noel quit the band in 2009 to start his own solo project, Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds, the siblings have hardly backed down, and it seems we can never go a few months without another outburst. Loudest Rapper Alive Theres nothing quiet about DMX. When he speaks, it sounds like hes yelling. So when hes yelling, you definitely pay attention. When Complex magazine did their ranking of Loudest Rappers Ever, DMX took the crown from other rambunctious rhymers like Lil Jon and Mystikal. Thats a pretty deafening statement. Loudest Band Known to Hold Audiences Hostage A lot of loud, aggressive bands came out of New Yorks early 80s new wave punk scene, though the loudest and most aggressive were probably Swans, whose early shows were sometimes shut down by police due to threatening decibel levels. Said frontman Michael Gira: There was one European show in a barn that only held 400 people. The stage wasnt wide enough to put the entire PA in front, so we put half of it in the front and half of it at the back, so the audience was smashed between! The walls, ceiling, everything was shaking, raining down years of collected dust. That was good. Loudest Band (International) Guitar Wolf live the loud life (say that six times). These three guys from Japan playing fast and furious garage inspired punk rock may be something that could potentially cause hearing damage. In fact, their 1999 album Jet Generation is said to be so loud that Matador Records claimed that The levels exceeded the theoretical maximum possible on compact disk audio. In other words, Jet Generation is the loudest CD in history. These guys definitely turn it up. Check out the full list of 11 Loud Moments in Music on Billboard.com. Tips To Remember The Portuguese Alphabet
Tips To Remember The Portuguese Alphabet Want To Master The Portuguese or Brazilian Alphabet? ChaptersThe Portuguese Alphabet â" The BasicsRemembering Portuguese LettersThereâs More To Portuguese Than Just Learning The AlphabetAnyone looking at taking up a new foreign language might be asking themselves what the best way to begin learning a language is.When you think about it, this is a really important question to ask. Learning a foreign language involves a variety of different steps, including learning the grammar of the language, its various tenses and moods, as well as learning that languageâs vocabulary, inclusive of all its adjectives, nouns, pronouns, and conjunctions.Itâs quite an intimidating list of things to learn!Thankfully, the good news is that no-one is expected to learn a foreign language in one day. Gaining fluency or near-fluency in a language takes time, patience, and above all practice, so itâs best to keep yourself motivated by selecting small aspects of the language to master first and building on your knowledge from there. As a result, one of th e first and best things you can do on your language learning journey, particularly if youâd like to study a language such as Portuguese, is to learn the Portuguese alphabet. This is because:Youâll need to know the alphabet if you want to be able to read and write in Portuguese;Mastering the alphabet can really help improve your Portuguese pronunciation; andItâs important to know how certain words are spelt differently in Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. With that in mind, this article outlines some of the key aspects of the Portuguese alphabet that you should be aware of and also provides you with some tips and tricks to help you memorise the Portuguese alphabet as quickly as possible. After all, once you have the Portuguese alphabet under your belt, youâll be able to focus on learning other aspects of Portuguese and improving your fluency.Learning the letters of the Portuguese alphabet will do wonders for your Portuguese language learning journey. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, rawpixel, Pixabay)It can really help to learn how to pronounce common combinations of letters, such as CH or NH; andItâs just as important to hear how a word is spoken as it is to learn how to spell the word.Flashcards can be a great tool to use when learning the Portuguese alphabet. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, AnnasPhotography, Pixabay)Remembering Portuguese LettersWhile itâs great to know how many letters there are in the Portuguese alphabet and how these letters sound â" whether in isolation or in combination with other letters â" learning a foreign language like Portuguese is most effective when you can memorise basics such as the alphabet. To do this, youâll need to spend some time working on consolidation exercises so that your knowledge of the Portuguese alphabet and each letterâs pronunciation becomes second nature. There are a variety of different techniques that you can employ to achieve this. Some are highlighted below.Learn The Alphabet By Splitting Letters Into Grou psSome people may find it difficult to easily memorise the entire alphabet of a foreign language just by reciting it front to back. If you find that this is the case for you, then try to make things easier by learning the letters in set blocks. For instance, try learning the Portuguese vowels separately to the consonants. The vowels in Portuguese are:A / E / I / O / UAgain, as an English speaker these vowels should be extremely familiar to you, and so hopefully shouldnât be too difficult to learn.Equally, when it comes to learning the consonants, you could try splitting them up into three separate sets and try to memorise them that way.Use FlashcardsFlashcards are really helpful as learning tools. This is because theyâre small, compact, and can be easily carried around. This means that you can write out the Portuguese alphabet (including how to pronounce each letter) onto a few flashcards and then you can test yourself on your knowledge of the Portuguese alphabet when youâre on the move or at home.Make Friends With The DictionaryWhen learning the alphabet, itâs best to try and also expand your Portuguese vocabulary at the same time, rather than just focussing on memorising each letter. This is because having a larger vocabulary at your disposal will make things easier when it comes to:Reading and understanding books, internet articles, or other written media in Portuguese;Speaking or writing in Portuguese (after all, sentences consist of a string of words!); andListening to other Portuguese speakers, as learning how words should sound will make them easier to recognise when someone says them. One of the best ways to improve your knowledge of vocabulary is to use a Portuguese dictionary. There are a variety of different dictionaries you can buy or borrow these days, from compact dictionaries that are great when travelling to huge tombs that are best kept at home.If youâre a beginner when it comes to learning Portuguese, donât feel obliged to buy an ex pensive Portuguese-English dictionary, as youâll likely only be looking up common or basic words.Instead, try to get a dictionary that includes a pronunciation guide for each word, and perhaps also consider buying a joint Portuguese-English and English-Portuguese dictionary, as that way itâs just as easy to translate a Portuguese word into English as it is to look up an English word and see what its Portuguese equivalent is.The Benefits Of Daily PracticeOne of the key things to bear in mind when learning Portuguese is that, with enough practice, the basics of the language â" such as its alphabet and basic pronunciation â" should become second nature to you.As a result, once youâre comfortable with the alphabet and are content that youâve memorised the letters so that you can recall them with very little to no difficulty, you can turn your attention to other areas of learning Portuguese, whether thatâs the Portuguese numerical system, basic verb conjugation, or learning c ommon expressions and phrases.Making time to learn a foreign language such as Portuguese and the Portuguese alphabet can do wonders for your proficiency in the long run. (Image Source: CC0 1.0, nile, Pixabay)Thereâs More To Portuguese Than Just Learning The AlphabetAlthough Portuguese can be difficult to master, particularly as the pronunciation of some words can be difficult for native English speakers to navigate, learning Portuguese can be hugely rewarding, not least because:Knowing a foreign language can look good on your CV;Portuguese is spoken by over 200 million people across the world as a native language; andYouâll have a much easier time travelling around Brazil or Portugal if you speak Portuguese. If you think youâd like to learn Portuguese but youâre not sure where to start, or youâre an intermediate or advanced Portuguese speaker who would like to keep on top of their language skills, then you could also look into hiring a Portuguese tutor to help you learn Por tuguese.Having a Portuguese tutor to hand can be very beneficial, as they can provide you with tailored exercises to help you increase your proficiency in Portuguese, whether you'd like to focus on improving your understanding of Portuguese grammar or would like to expand your knowledge of Portuguese vocabulary and common phrases and expressions.Whether you would like to learn Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese, Superprof has a range of Portuguese tutors available that are able to provide you with support and motivation when it comes to improving your Portuguese reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Equally, Superprof tutors can cater to a wide range of tuition formats, including one to one tuition and group tuition and workshops.

Judging School Performance
Judging School Performance By now, everyone has heard something negative about Americas public schools. They are falling behind foreign countries; they dont prepare kids for college or future employment; its the teachers fault; its the bureaucrats fault, reads the news. Simply put, many schools in America need help, and now the government is making it official as it could soon label three-fourths of public schools failing under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, according to an article in the Washington Post. The Obama administration recently announced that it would revamp former president George W. Bushs original education initiative. Arne Duncan, Federal Education Secretary, believes that the school ratings system Bush put in place with the No Child Left Behind Act is in jeopardy itself because the law is no longer workable. Obama and Duncan are pushing to lighten up on the ratings system, labeling fewer schools as failing, but cracking down hard on under-achieving schools. Duncan said that the No Child Left Behind Act had created dozens of ways for schools to fail and very few to help them succeed. Duncan and the Federal Education Department estimate that up to 82% of schools could be labeled failing, an increase from last years 37%. The No Child Left Behind Act creates benchmarks for schools to rise steadily nationwide, in hopes of creating adequate education for all students. However, critics say that the law creates a blunt pass/fail approach, and the many schools labeled as failing are actually performing well. Under this act, schools must test students in every grade third through eighth and once in high school on reading and math skills. Those scores, combined with attendance and graduation rates, let the government determine if schools are making adequate yearly progress toward becoming proficient. Also, the No Child Left Behind Act set a lofty goal of a 100% proficiency rate by 2014. Obama is planning to measure schools based on their students academic growth. Schools that excel will be rewarded, schools that fall in the middle would be given more flexibility to improve themselves and failing schools at the bottom will face strict federal mandates to adopt changes to improve. The Obama administrations efforts to revamp public education have been slowed by budget cuts; however, he hopes that threatening to label three-fourths of schools as failing will force lawmakers to take stronger actions to improve education. Whether Obamas actions are a threat or serious, they have sparked movement from both parties in Congress to create education legislature. Sen. Lamar Alexander, Republican from Tennessee and former education secretary, said he would cooperate with Democrats on the education debate, as Sen. Tom Harkin, Democrat from Iowa and chairman on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee said he wants to create a bipartisan bill before Easter.

Brigham Young University A Student Interview
Brigham Young University A Student Interview The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Spencer is a Phoenix tutor and 2010 graduate of Brigham Young University. He holds a Bachelors degree in International Relations and Russian and tutors several subjects, specializing inHistory tutoring, Reading tutoring, and Writing tutoring. Check out what Spencer had to say about his time at Brigham Young University: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or rural is the campus? Did you feel safe on campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Spencer: The Brigham Young University campus has a very suburban feel. Most student housing is within walking distance of campus, so walking or riding a bike is sufficient. Student parking is rather limited, especially during peak class times. The city does provide buses to and from major downtown areas, including a new light rail line to Salt Lake City. These are reasonably priced, and students can often secure special year- or semester-long commuter passes. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Spencer:Overall, the availability of professors, advisers, and teaching assistants is excellent. Almost without exception, the people I worked with were interested in my education, and they were willing to do everything they could to help me succeed. I would highly recommend contacting professors and advisers early (before the start of term) with any questions. This distinguishes you from the crowd, and it can help establish you as a serious student. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Spencer:Brigham Young University is a very social place. There are a large number of clubs, and numerous social events each week on campus, including free concerts, educational forums, dances, and department-sponsored events. The athletics scene is also very good, with many events each semester. Student athletic passes are reasonably priced, especially for the football games. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Spencer:Business (in the Marriott School of Management) is one of the flagship programs at Brigham Young University. The School of Family Life and the foreign language departments are also well represented. I double majored in International Relations and Russian because of my love of diversity and cross-cultural experiences. I have lived in several countries, and I enjoy sharing experiences with people from many different walks of life. The university leadership is very supportive of the International Relations program, and each semester there are amazing speakers, including ambassadors, government leaders, noted authors, military officials, and journalists. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Spencer:The overall social scene is excellent, and making friends was usually easy. Some of the larger 100-level freshman classes were intimidating due to class size (100+ students). I strongly recommend the smaller 100-level Honors classes, as the professors are better and the class sizes are much smaller (15-40 students). The smaller classes give you a chance to create study groups, make friends, and find out about new activities. There are also dozens of clubs on campus, ranging from creative writing and fencing to hiking and astronomy. Find one you like and join it. There are no sororities or fraternities on campus. The numerous clubs seem to fill that niche, and they do a pretty good job, in my opinion. Each college also has chapters of the applicable national honor societies for its disciplines. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Spencer:Brigham Young University has an amazing career fair each year. Numerous Fortune 500 companies, local businesses, and government agencies recruit here. There is both a fall and winter career fair, and lists of the attending companies can be found online or with a guidance counselor. The general guidance counselors for the university are honestly not great. They basically refer you to 100-level study skills classes and try to help you find your discipline of choice. In their defense, there are dozens of colleges and majors on campus, and they cannot know everything. If you want good academic advice, identify two or three majors that are somewhat interesting to you, and schedule an appointment to meet with the college-specific counselors. They are very knowledgeable and super helpful. They can get you squared away with entry-level classes to take, or even professors to speak with. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Spencer:There are dozens of wonderful places to study on campus. The library is vast and extremely roomy! There are also small group and individual study areas sprinkled across the many buildings throughout campus. I could always find somewhere to study, and the furniture, WiFi access, and facilities were almost always amazing! VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Spencer:Provo is a quiet little town with a decent array of fun things to do. It is also a very religious community, so the recreational activities are conservative. Entertainment includes movie theaters, a water park, an arcade, an ice skating rink, an indoor climbing gym, restaurants (a surprising number of great ethnic food choices), and two shopping malls. Where Provo really shines is its access to wilderness areas and natural areas. There are waterfalls, hiking and biking trails, ski resorts, lakes, and mountain climbing opportunities within a very short distance! If you love the outdoors, you will love Provo! The winters are actually pretty mild (when compared to the Midwest or Northeast), and the summers are amazing! The mountains are gorgeous all year long, and there is always a new trail, national park, or waterfall to go visit. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Spencer:There are over 30,000 students at Brigham Young University, with students from every state and dozens of different countries. Although the vast majority are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or the Mormon Church), which is the school sponsor, members of other faiths are welcomed and treated with respect. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I met Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, and Catholic students at Brigham Young University. I always felt that students of other faiths and backgrounds were treated well and found a good home at Brigham Young University, though I respect that some non-Mormons have different experiences and opinions. I found the number of students to be daunting at first, but, in general, I liked the rhythm and pace of campus life. Once you find your college or sub-group, the big tide of humanity is something you can just swim on, rather than drown in. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Spencer:I was the Head Teaching Assistant for a professor who taught a class called The History of Creativity. Every year, during his lecture on Greek philosophy, he would come dressed as Socrates and engage in a debate on ethics with class members using the Socratic method. This really made the discussion come alive, and helped the students place themselves in history. Although I worked as a teaching assistant for several semesters, I never tired of this lecture because of the way it helped bring history to life for myself and the students. What Makes a Great Gift for a Child with ADHD
What Makes a Great Gift for a Child with ADHD Its that time of year again when we all work hard to find just the right toy or gift for our kids. If you have a child with ADHD, gift giving is yet one more area where you may find yourself being even more thoughtful than most about the items you choose. The team at ADDitude Magazine recently published a whole host of gift ideas for kids with ADHD, ranging from fidget kits to stress relievers, to books to toys. Their articles cover great non-tech toys (https://www.additudemag.com/slideshows/gift-ideas-adhd-kids/), gift ideas for kids with sensory issues (https://www.additudemag.com/slideshows/sensory-gifts-for-adhd-children/) and products designed for tactile learners (https://www.additudemag.com/slideshows/educational-toys-for-children-with-adhd/). They are terrific resources for parents. But outside of these recommended toys, what should you be thinking about when evaluating toys and gifts for your child with ADHD? Try this simple checklist to help you make great decisions. Does it play to their strengths and help them feel a sense of accomplishment? Between school and homework, kids with ADHD spend a lot of time involved in activities that play to their weaknesses instead of their strengths. During their downtime, look for activities that will play to their strengths, whether its their artistic, musical, athletic, or social abilities, and allow them to shine. Also, look for gifts that are age appropriate and within their ability level. Its great if a toy or activity challenges your child and stretches their skills. Just avoid gifts that are likely to be too difficult and lead to the frustration and meltdowns that can quickly derail playtime for kids with ADHD. Does it allow for creative play? Kids with ADHD thrive when they can play outside the box and create moments that fit with how they prefer to interact with their world. So toys and games that dont fit a mold or have strict rules about how they are played tend to be favorites among the ADHD kid set. These toys and games allow them to express themselves through their play and bring their version of the world to life. Does it keep them busy and engaged? There is a reason fidget toys are so popular with all kids, but especially kids with ADHD. It keeps them busy. They help channel that nervous, hyperactive energy so kids can feel calm and have more space for creative thinking. There are many hands-on toys available that allow kids to focus and calm their mind. For kids who arent very active, but need an engaging activity to quiet their thoughts, detailed coloring books for kids (and adults) paired with a big set of colored pencils can make a great gift. Is it active? Is it outdoors? Most kids with ADHD have more than enough energy to burn. When they dont have any opportunity to be active, their ADHD symptoms become worse, and everyone in the family suffers. So, games that involve running, jumping, stretching, reaching (Twister anyone?) anything active will be a good fit for your child with ADHD. Outdoor games are also great for kids with ADHD, getting them away from screens and using up some of that energy. Just be wary of games that require a tremendous amount of of coordination or hours of practice to master. These games can frustrate some kids with ADHD and will be anything but fun. Is it fast-paced? Kids with ADHD are most focused and engaged when they are participating in a faced paced activity. Fast paced, shorter games leave little space for kids minds to wander, setting children with ADHD up for success and fun! With so much to choose from this holiday season, finding the right gift for a child with ADHD can feel overwhelming. But with a little thoughtfulness and consideration of your childs strengths and their ADHD needs, you can find the perfect gift that will bring hours of fun. ABOUT DR. Can Brain Training Exercises Help Your Students
Can Brain Training Exercises Help Your Students Maybe youve heard of brain training and wondered what it is, and if it could benefit your students. Put simply, brain training is working out your brain. Certain mental exercises are very effective at developing cognitive skills. Students can boost their memories, sharpen their focus and concentration levels, increase processing speed, and more. The great news: your students can build their cognitive strength with just a little effort each day. Here are a few simple things to encourage your students to do in class and at home: Try the Pomodoro method. Have students set a timer to work uninterrupted for 25 minutes, then take a break for five. This is a great way to build the attention span. Start with even shorter periods if needed. Develop time management. Believe it or not, building executive functioning skills like time management boosts the brain. Spend a few minutes every class going over your minute-by-minute agenda, and encourage your students to keep detailed schedules and planners. Build the working memory. Develop your students memorization skills and attention span. Card games are a great way to hone these abilities, and students who develop their organizational skills also consistently strengthen their working memory. Have students use tools to streamline daily routines. Checklists, homework charts, and planners are helpful aids for all students and build cognitive abilities like memory and brain speed. The brain is like a muscle that can be strengthened. Help your students do so and you will give them much more than subject-matter knowledge. Youll equip them with skills for life.
